Bears’ Oldest Fans Cheer Hardest for Super Bowl

Residents of Illinois Council on Long Term Care facilities
have cheered on team longer than most

VISUALS

Nursing home residents – and lifelong Bears fans – kick off the game with colorful pre-Super Bowl parties.

WHAT

The long and storied history of the Chicago Bears is equaled only by the personal histories of some of their oldest fans.  Before the 1985 Bears mauled the Patriots in Super Bowl XX -- before there even was a Super Bowl -- these fans cheered on the team.  Now, residents of the Illinois Council on Long Term Care facilities are prepared to do the same for this Sunday’s Super Bowl XLI.

Residents and staff of the facilities will bear down for the big game with pompoms in hand at Super Bowl parties across the state. Beer and a big-screen TV will take the field at both the Selfhelp Home and Kenwood Healthcare Center in Chicago, while the staff at the Jackson Square Nursing & Rehab, also in Chicago, will lead residents in reciting the infamous “Prayer for Da Bears” (beginning “Our papa, who art a Bear…”) before the game.  And, while Glenbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Niles will throw a pre-game patio tailgate cookout for friends and family, Albany Care in Evanston is really kicking things off early.  The home for persons with mental illness declared Friday, Feb. 2, “Bears Day,” complete with Bears trivia, a 1985 Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle” contest and touchdown musical chairs to the tune of the new 2007 Bears’ “Shuffle.”

No Super Bowl party would be complete without game-day snacks, blue and orange decorations and, of course, the game itself at 5 p.m.
