Rep. Eddie Washington Announces Amendment for House Bill 822 During News Conference Today

WHO &

WHAT:

Rep. Eddie Washington, sponsor of House Bill 822, certified medication aides in long term care, will announce an amendment to the bill at a news conference today.  The amendment is a result of the Illinois Council on Long Term Care, Illinois Health Care Association, Life Services Network of Illinois and additional organizations working together to agree on new language.

HB 822 establishes a certified medication aide program in Illinois that will train certified and experienced nursing assistants to pass out routine medications in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. This amendment to the bill:

w        Creates a comprehensive planning and certification committee that will develop the training program and certification requirements;

w        Clarifies that a licensed nurse overseeing a certified medication aide is not liable for the actions of that certified medication aide;

w        States that certified medication aides will have no other assignments during the time they are passing out routine medications; and

w        Specifies that certified medication aides will not be replacing existing nurses and nurse aides required by law.

WHY:

This amendment further strengthens the goals of HB 822, which are to continue to keep residents safe, to allow nurses to do more for residents throughout the day and to create a career ladder for certified nurse aides.
